Junior League of Alexandria Grants 2012
The Junior League grants committee, in its 11th year, awarded $14,650 in grants to different non-profit organizations in our focus area which address women and children’s issues. These much needed grants allow the Junior League to spread our mission through other community organizations. Our committee has awarded the following grants:
The Junior League grants committee, in its 11th year, awarded $14,650 in grants to different non-profit organizations in our focus area which address women and children’s issues. These much needed grants allow the Junior League to spread our mission through other community organizations. Our committee has awarded the following grants:
- St Frances Cabrini School: Grant money will be used for the school’s iCan Read Project. This money will be used to increase reading skills of first and second grade students at St. Frances Cabrini School by using Apple iPod Touch devices.
- The Rapides Exploratory Education House (T.R.E.E. House): Grant money will be used towards programming expenses and supporting outreach programs through summer camps and educational workshops to low income children and families. These programs create learning opportunities through exploratory play and help to promote interactive learning.
- Volunteers of America of North Louisiana: Grant money will be used to expand the Crisis Pregnancy Program, which serves young women who are experiencing an unplanned and /or crisis pregnancy.
- A Perfect Fit Foundation-The Central Louisiana Community Foundation: Grant money will be used to provide well-fitted, uniform-approved shoes to underprivileged school children in the Rapides Parish School System as identified by teachers in their classrooms.
- The Food Bank of Central Louisiana: Grant Money will be used to assist the Back Pack Program in providing backpacks with nutritious food to impoverished children at L.S. Rugg Elementary School for an average of 36 weeks.
- YMCA of Alexandria and Rapides Parish: Grant Money will be used for the YMCA summer day camps to purchase healthy snacks and literature to provide to campers and their families regarding the importance of healthy eating.
- St. Mary’s Residential Training School: Grant Money will be used to purchase an adjustable hospital bed with elecontric controls to help individuals with severe and profound developmental disabilities have a healthier and more comfortable recovery.
- Hope House of Central Louisiana: Grant Money will be used to provide the necessary domestic violence materials and education, support, legal advocacy and outreach to clients who have histories of experiencing domestic violence.
- Alma Redwine Elementary School :Grant Money will be used to assist underprivileged students that are in need of personal items including uniforms, belts, shoes, socks and personal hygiene products.
- Central Louisiana Arts & Healthcare, Inc. : Grant Money will be used to help the Pediatric Visiting Artist Program pay visual artists and performers to visit sick children in local hospitals.
- Boys & Girls Club of Central Louisiana, Inc. : Grant Money will be used for the Boys & Girls Club’s Program Academic Success: Literacy in Action. This money will assist with building the program’s library and enhancing program resources through books, hands-on learning and interactive lessons, as well as helping to create Club Garden.
- Carter C. Raymond Elementary School : Grant Money will be used towards providing 3rd & 4th grade students a field trip to either Baton Rouge or New Orleans, in hopes to enhance their social studies curriculum by providing a hands on educational opportunity to learn about the government and culture of the State of Louisiana.
- Kent Plantation House : Grant Money will be used to assist with purchasing costumes for the Jane in June 2012 camp. This camp is dedicated to teach young ladies manners, how to prepare food, table setting and assisting with teaching the history of plantation life in Louisiana.
- First United Methodist Church of Alexandria-STARS Program (Spiritual Tuesdays Aiding Rugg Students) : Grant Money will be used to purchase backpacks and school supplies for low income students from L.S. Rugg Elementary who attend the STARS Program. This program helps more children to be prepared for school and have the necessary tools needed to do homework.
- NextSTEP of Central Louisiana, Inc. Grant Money will be used towards educating Cenla’s teens about dating violence through a portable multimedia-based awareness and prevention program called, A Fight We Can Win. This program teaches teens through the use of music and drama and will help identify types of dating abuse, describe warning signs of an abusive relationship, provide a better understanding of datng rights and encourage teens in an abusive relationship to seek help.
