I am honored to serve as president as I continue along my Junior League journey. I often find myself sharing with others why I CHOOSE to continue on this journey. Volunteers not only need and have HEART but they each have a past that has lead them to this call of service. During my years in school I was very active in numerous organizations and always managed to find my way into leadership roles. My parents always supported me in my ambitious endeavors and showed me examples of both strong leadership and an empathetic heart. When I met my husband in college, he too shared with me his supportive nature and contagious sense of humor. Why am I sharing all of this with you? Because my story is my ROOTS, and my roots are filled with leaders, caregivers, teachers, and enthusiasts. Each have helped me to this point in my journey and to realize that volunteers have both STRONG ROOTS and OPEN HEARTS.

The Junior League of Alexandria has strong roots in the Cenla community and our membership is filled with women that have open hearts, willing to serve others. Our roots in the community were established 75 years ago and have flourished ever since. Many current and past community projects and organizations began in the hearts of a Junior League member and all equally support our mission. Along with investing in the community, our members invested in the future of our League. They began planting seeds for our membership to one day construct an adequate facility to enhance the work that we do and TRULY strengthen our roots in the community. Thankful to those members that put this plan to action many years ago, we are continuing through with their plan and have high hopes that in the near future the Junior League of Alexandria will have a permanent home on Bayou Place.

In the eight years that I have been a part of this service organization, our membership has continued to evolve and grow. Recently, with guidance from the Association of Junior Leagues International, our membership laid the groundwork for our transition into a split governing and managing organizational structure. Going forward we will have a governing board of directors to focus on the strategic planning and sustainability of our League, and a management team to formulate and carry out our annual plan. I am looking forward to serving alongside this dynamic group of women. It has already been revealed to me that the governing and management restructure will increase our productivity and the satisfaction of our membership, so we can continue to recruit fellow women from our community with strong roots and open hearts to join our service organization for years to come.

What are these OPEN HEARTS that I make reference to? Every one of the ladies that is a member of the Junior League has one of these open hearts. These ladies are friends, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts…they work in various professions supporting their families…and then to top it off they manage to find time in their days to serve the Junior League and members of our community freely without always getting a personal thank you. Now I say thank you to each and every one that has given so many hours to others over the years.

Junior League is a unique volunteer organization, where each member plays an important role in bringing the membership’s ideas to a reality. Taking on the responsibility of a chairman position is not a decision one should take lightly. It is one that comes along with much responsibility, but I can also guarantee much reward and many lessons will be learned. This League year we have a good mix of veteran chairman and first timers. Thank you to each of our ladies that have stepped up to chairmen positions and for sharing your open hearts with our League and community.

To me personal growth is very important and through the years I have learned so much about myself, professionally and personally. I hope that over the next two years I continue to learn and grow with the membership of our Junior League. With every self assessment that I am handed to fill out something new is always revealed to me but the one thing that I hold on to is that STRONG ROOTS allow for OPEN HEARTS.

Thank you for your interest and continued commitment to our amazing membership and powerful organization that I feel confident in saying we are all proud to be a part of.
